Heat pump problems

Common heat pump problems

A heat pump heats and cools your home with one system, so it runs nearly year-round and wears differently from a furnace or a standalone AC. Signs it needs repair:

  • Cool or lukewarm air while set to heat
  • Ice on the outdoor unit that doesn't clear
  • It runs constantly but never reaches the set temperature
  • Short cycling every few minutes
  • "Aux heat" or "emergency heat" on most of the time
  • Buzzing, grinding or rattling outdoors
  • It won't switch between heating and cooling

What we repair

Reversing valves

The valve that switches between heating and cooling.

Defrost controls & sensors

Parts that keep ice from building on the outdoor coil.

Refrigerant leaks

If refrigerant is low, there's a leak. We find and repair it before recharging.

Electrical & airflow

Capacitors, contactors, relays, blower motors, filters and thermostat settings.

Winter

Heat pumps in Northern Kentucky winters

Cold, damp Northern Kentucky winters are hard on heat pumps. Some of what you see is normal:

  • Steam from the outdoor unit: usually the defrost cycle melting frost.
  • Air that feels less hot than furnace air: normal for a heat pump. Air that feels cool in heat mode is not.
  • A brief pause or whoosh: normal during defrost or a mode change.

Help it through winter: keep snow, ice and leaves clear of the outdoor unit, and change the filter regularly.

Backup heat

Heat pump vs. furnace backup

Most heat pumps have a backup heat source for the coldest days and for defrost cycles. In some homes that's electric heat strips; in others it's a gas furnace (a "dual-fuel" system).

Backup heat is supposed to help, not take over. If your thermostat shows aux or emergency heat most of the time, or your electric bill jumped, the heat pump itself may not be working, or the thermostat may be set up wrong. We check both.

Have a gas furnace backup that isn't working? See furnace repair.

Before you call: quick checks

  • Thermostat set to Heat (or Cool) at the right temperature
  • A clean air filter
  • Indoor and outdoor breakers on
  • Snow, leaves and debris cleared from the outdoor unit

Repair or replace

Repair or replace?

If the problem is a capacitor, contactor, sensor or defrost control, repair is usually the smart choice. Replacement may make more sense when:

  • The compressor fails on an older heat pump
  • There's a major refrigerant repair
  • It keeps breaking down
  • It can't keep the house comfortable in winter

We'll explain both options. Complete system replacements come with a free estimate.

Service it twice a year

A heat pump works in both seasons, so it benefits from a tune-up before each one. The Comfort Club includes two seasonal tune-ups for $249 a year per home.

Questions

FAQs

Why is my heat pump blowing cold air in heat mode?
It may be running a defrost cycle, which is normal and brief. If it keeps blowing cool air, the cause may be a reversing valve, refrigerant or control problem.
Why is my outdoor unit covered in ice?
Light frost is normal in cold, damp weather, and the defrost cycle clears it. Heavy ice that doesn't clear points to a defrost control or airflow problem.
What does "emergency heat" or "aux heat" mean?
It's the backup heat. It's normal on the coldest days and during defrost. If it runs most of the time, the heat pump probably needs service.
Is steam from the outdoor unit normal?
Usually, yes. That's the defrost cycle melting frost off the outdoor coil.
Do you handle emergency heat pump calls?
Yes. Emergency calls are handled by our on-call team. Call (859) 551-0056.
How much does heat pump repair cost?
It depends on what failed and the parts it needs. We explain what we found and the price before any repair work begins. Comfort Club members pay a $99 service call fee (non-members pay $120) and get 15% off repairs. See the Comfort Club.
