Replace or repair

Signs it is time to replace

Repair often makes sense. Replacement may make more sense when:

  • Repairs keep adding up year after year
  • A major part, such as the heat exchanger, fails on an older furnace
  • Some rooms never warm up
  • Heating bills keep climbing
  • The furnace is noisy or short cycles
  • You're replacing the AC and want matched equipment

Not sure? We'll give you both options. See furnace repair.

Safety comes first

A cracked heat exchanger can let carbon monoxide into your home. If a CO alarm sounds, get everyone into fresh air and call 911. If you smell gas, leave the home and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.

Efficiency & sizing

Choosing a furnace: efficiency and sizing

Efficiency (AFUE)

AFUE is the share of fuel that becomes heat in your home. High-efficiency furnaces use less fuel for the same heat; we'll explain the trade-off in upfront cost.

Gas or electric

We install both. Most homes stay with the fuel they already have.

Sizing

Too big and it short cycles; too small and it runs nonstop. We size to your home and look at your ductwork.

Heat pump option

A heat pump can heat and cool, with the furnace as backup. Heat pump installation.

Questions

FAQs

How do I know it's time to replace my furnace?
Common signs are repeated repairs, a major part failing on an older furnace, rooms that never warm up, and heating bills that keep climbing. A cracked heat exchanger is a safety issue and usually means replacement.
Gas or electric furnace?
Most homes stay with what they have, because the gas line or electrical service is already in place. We'll explain the options for your home.
What does AFUE mean?
AFUE is a furnace's efficiency rating: the share of the fuel that becomes heat in your home. A higher AFUE uses less fuel for the same heat.
Is the estimate free?
Yes, on complete system replacements. You get your options in writing before any work.
Do you offer financing?
Financing is available through Wisetack, subject to credit approval. Financing details.
Should I consider a heat pump instead?
Sometimes. A heat pump heats and cools, and it can be paired with a furnace for backup heat. See heat pump installation.
