Furnace problems

Common furnace problems we fix

We repair furnaces for homes across Boone, Kenton and Campbell counties and Greater Cincinnati. Common problems include:

  • No heat, or the furnace blows cold air
  • The furnace won't turn on
  • Short cycling: starting and stopping every few minutes
  • Ignition or flame sensor problems
  • The blower runs nonstop, or not at all
  • Banging, squealing or rattling noises
  • A tripping breaker
  • Thermostat or control problems

Heater not working? Check these first

  • Thermostat set to Heat, a few degrees above room temperature
  • A clean air filter
  • The furnace switch and breaker on
  • The furnace door panel closed (it has a safety switch)

Still no heat? Call (859) 551-0056.

Gas & electric

Gas and electric furnaces

Gas and electric furnaces heat your home in different ways, so they fail in different ways. We diagnose and repair both.

Gas furnaces

Igniters, flame sensors, gas valves, inducer motors, pressure switches, limit switches and control boards.

Electric furnaces

Heating elements, sequencers, relays, blower motors and wiring.

Both

Thermostats, filters, airflow and the blower that moves heat through your ductwork.

Safety

Safety first: CO and odors

Some heating problems are a safety issue first and a repair second.

  • Gas smell (rotten eggs): leave the home first. Don't use switches or anything that could spark. Call your gas utility or 911 from outside.
  • Carbon monoxide alarm: get everyone into fresh air and call 911. Have the furnace checked before you use it again.
  • Burning smell: a light dusty smell the first time the heat runs each season is common. A strong or lasting burning or electrical smell is not. Turn the furnace off and call us.
  • CO alarms: keep working carbon monoxide alarms near sleeping areas and on each level of your home.

Repair or replace

Repair or replace your furnace?

Repair usually makes sense when the part is small and the furnace is otherwise healthy. Replacement may make more sense when:

  • A major part, such as the heat exchanger, fails on an older furnace
  • Repairs keep adding up year after year
  • Some rooms never warm up
  • Your heating bills keep climbing

We'll explain both options. Complete system replacements come with a free estimate.

Have a heat pump instead?

Heat pumps fail differently from furnaces. See heat pump repair.

Keep it running with a pre-season furnace tune-up.

Questions

FAQs

Why is my furnace blowing cold air?
Check that the thermostat is set to Heat and the fan is on Auto. If it still blows cold, the cause may be an ignition or flame sensor problem, a dirty filter tripping a safety limit, or a control problem.
Why does my furnace keep turning on and off?
Short cycling can come from a dirty filter, an overheating heat exchanger tripping a limit switch, a dirty flame sensor or a thermostat problem. It's worth having checked, because it wears parts out.
Do you repair electric furnaces?
Yes. We repair both gas and electric furnaces.
Do you work on boilers?
Yes. Alliance services residential boilers. See boiler repair.
What should I do if I smell gas?
Leave the home first. Don't use light switches, phones or anything that could spark inside. Call your gas utility or 911 from outside.
Do you handle emergency furnace calls?
Yes. Emergency calls are handled by our on-call team. Call (859) 551-0056.
